Regenerative endodontic procedures vs. root canal therapy

...

Investigators examined whether regenerative endodontic procedures could provide additional benefits in patients with pulpal and periapical pathologies.

In a systematic review and meta-analysis published in the British Dental Journal, investigators evaluated the success rates of regenerative endodontic procedures compared with traditional root canal treatment across nine studies.

Although the clinical outcomes, radiographic healing and tooth survival rates of both treatment options were comparable, regenerative endodontic procedures were more effective at restoring the sensibility of the pulp as well as stimulating continued root maturation and strengthening the dentinal wall compared with the conventional approach.

The investigators concluded that regenerative endodontic procedures could offer advantages in certain patient populations and provide an effective alternative to traditional root canal therapy; however, further studies are needed to better understand the long-term outcomes of the procedures.
