Relationship between hearing loss, Parkinson’s disease

Hearing loss could be linked to an increased risk of developing Parkinson’s disease.

In a study published in JAMA Neurology, investigators used data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to examine the electronic health records of 3.6 million veterans with mild, moderate, moderate to severe, severe or no hearing loss between Jan. 1, 1999, and Dec. 30, 2022.

The risk of Parkinson’s disease was found to be higher among those who had hearing loss compared with those who had normal hearing. However, prompt hearing aid dispensation was effective at attenuating the risk of Parkinson’s disease.

The findings suggested that more widespread screenings for hearing loss could mitigate the risk of Parkinson’s disease in this patient population.
