Retirement isn't making everyone happier — here's why
One-third of retired adults are not happier since retiring, according to a new survey from insurance company MassMutual that followed 2,000 U.S. retirees and workers approaching retirement between late January and early February.
Overall, the study found that retirement does increase people's sense of wellbeing, with about 67% of retirees who are 15 years or less into retirement stating they are happier since retiring, and 61% who reported feeling "much happier" said they paid off their debt at least five years before retiring.
Only 8% report feeling less happy in retirement, but one-third indicated that they are not more happy than they were before leaving the workforce. Almost half said this is because they sometimes feel lonely.
