Risk of postextraction surgical site infections in patients with chronic kidney disease

Investigators have examined the risk of surgical site infections in patients with chronic kidney disease and on hemodialysis who underwent tooth extractions.

In a study published in the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, the investigators examined the outcomes of 157,994 Japanese adults who underwent tooth extractions between 2015 and 2021. They excluded impacted wisdom tooth extractions.

The investigators found that the risk of surgical site infections was about twofold and threefold higher among the patients with stage IV or V chronic kidney disease and those on hemodialysis, respectively. The patients with mild or moderate chronic kidney disease did not present with a heightened risk of infection.

The findings highlighted the importance of maintaining proper oral health among high-risk patients with chronic kidney disease.
