Risks of frequent teeth whitening

Experts have warned against excessive teeth whitening as social media trends have increased popularity of the products.

The use of teeth-whitening products rose steeply during the COVID-19 pandemic as individuals were presented regularly with their appearance over video-conferencing software, according to a report from Scientific American. However, continuous use of over-the-counter teeth-whitening products such as strips, pens and gel-filled trays could impact oral health. Overuse has been shown to damage the enamel and gums, cause tooth sensitivity and lead to translucent teeth, possibly revealing the inner layer of the tooth — which is yellow.

The experts cited in the article detailed that although the hydrogen peroxide in over-the-counter teeth-whitening products can eliminate discoloration, it can also make the enamel more permeable and reveal the underlying dentin. The damage from infrequent tooth bleaching is usually erased by salivary or dietary remineralization that fortifies the enamel, but regular bleaching can result in tooth erosion.

Individuals who desire whiter teeth were advised to visit their dentists to undergo the most effective and professional treatment once or twice per year.
