Role of gut microbiome in atopic dermatitis
Gut microbiota composition may be associated with the development of atopic dermatitis, according to a study published in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology.
In the study, investigators conducted a literature review to identify studies focused on the gut microbiota in people with atopic dermatitis.
The investigators discovered that gut microbiota diversity was typically lower in the patients with atopic dermatitis compared with healthy patients. Beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus are often depleted and pathogenic bacteria like Clostridium difficile and Staphylococcus aureus are more abundant in patients with atopic dermatitis.
However, Bifidobacterium- and Lactobacillus-containing probiotics have shown efficacy in reducing disease severity in this patient population by enhancing gut microbiota diversity and modulating immune responses.
