Safety, efficacy of CBD oil in oral pain management
Cannabidiol oil may have analgesic effects in patients with a chronic oral pain condition, according to a news article from Dr. Bicuspid.
Experts detailed that burning mouth syndrome is characterized by a tingling, numbing or scalding sensation in the oral cavity, including on the tongue and lips.
In a study published in Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology and Oral Radiology, researchers randomly assigned more than 25 patients with a mean age of about 62 years who had burning mouth syndrome to receive either full-spectrum CBD oil or placebo. They noted that a large majority of the participants identified as female.
Compared with those who received placebo, the participants who received CBD oil had greater improvements in pain intensity, pain impact and oral health-related quality of life. The greatest positive effects were seen after the third follow-up assessment. The researchers reported that the treatment had good tolerability and a favorable safety profile, with no observed serious adverse events.
The findings could represent a potential new therapeutic option in a patient population with a current unmet need, particularly those with refractory burning mouth syndrome. However, larger long-term studies will be needed to validate the safety and efficacy of full-spectrum CBD oil prior to its adoption in clinical practice.
