Salmonella outbreaks connected to backyard poultry flocks

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that 109 people from 29 states have gotten sick from salmonella after touching backyard poultry.

While no deaths have been reported, there have been 33 hospitalizations, and 43% of the people infected with salmonella are under 5 years old. According to the report, backyard poultry can carry the disease even if they look clean, and the germs can easily spread to anything in the areas where the poultry live and roam.

In order to mitigate this risk, the CDC advises washing your hands immediately after touching backyard poultry, their eggs or anything in the area where they live and roam. The agency also encourages supervising kids around flocks, handling eggs safely and calling a health care provider if you experience symptoms.
