Saving money with digital workflows

A digital workflow may help reduce treatment costs in patients requiring implant-supported removable complete overdentures.

In a study published in Clinical Implant Dentistry and Related Research, researchers assessed the costs of digitally designed and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing-fabricated implant-supported removable complete overdentures compared with a conventionally fabricated version. They then randomly assigned 36 patients with complete edentulism to wear the digitally designed overdentures for one year followed by the conventionally fabricated overdentures for a second year or vice versa.

Although there were no statistically significant differences in general health-related quality of life between the two groups, costs, treatment time and number of treatment sessions were all reduced with the digitally designed overdentures.

The findings suggested that a digital workflow could help minimize costs while maintaining the quality of the implant-supported removable complete overdentures.
