Schools face dilemma with lice infestations

...

A lack of rigorous adherence to lice protocols has led to outbreaks in schools.

Experts noted that 2024 recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggested that individuals with live lice or eggs can remain in school after initiating treatment, according to a news article from NPR. However, reports of infestations and reinfestations have demonstrated how more lenient lice policies could be ineffective at controlling outbreaks and result in a financial toll on the families affected.

The experts detailed that there is currently a scarcity of data surrounding the impact of changing lice management strategies as well as an incomplete picture of the number of lice infestations per year. As a result, schools continue to keep children with lice in attendance. Some proponents of the new guidelines have suggested that the policies consider the ramifications of sending children home when they have lice, including the social toll caused by stigmatization and the loss of face-to-face time with their peers.
