Single blood test could improve cancer outcomes

An annual blood test could help reduce the burden of late-stage cancer diagnosis and mortality.
In a study published in BMJ Open, investigators performed a state-transition model to examine the benefit of performing annual multicancer early detection blood tests or standard biennial testing.
Although the biennial testing offered higher positive predictive values and greater efficiency in preventing five-year mortality, annual multicancer early detection screening was associated with fewer late-stage cancer diagnoses and cancer-related deaths within five years.
The findings could help optimize cancer screening intervals for multicancer early detection blood tests. Nonetheless, the investigators emphasized that the blood tests are meant to complement rather than replace current single-cancer screening methods.
