Small amounts of vigorous exercise could mitigate cardiovascular risks in women

Brief but vigorous physical activity each day could help reduce the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events among women.

In a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, investigators used data from the UK Biobank to analyze the relationship between vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity and major adverse cardiovascular events among 13,018 women and 9,350 men.

After a follow-up of 7.9 years, the investigators identified 331 and 488 major adverse cardiovascular events in women and men, respectively. The women who avoided exercise but achieved 3.4 minutes of vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity per day were less likely to experience all major adverse cardiovascular events, heart failure and myocardial infarction. These associations were weaker in the men.

The investigators concluded that just small amounts of vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity could help improve cardiovascular health in women.
