Staff shortage continues for dentists

Virginia dentists are struggling to fill a statewide shortage of dental hygienists, but the gap is most acute in Northern Virginia, says the Virginia Dental Association. 

There are likely several reasons for the staffing shortage. Many hygienists left the field and didn't return during the pandemic, a time where dental colleges began enrolling fewer students. Dental hygienists are currently in the top 20 in-demand positions in Virginia. 

The shortage has affected patient care at some dental practices, as there aren't enough hygienists to schedule regular six-month cleanings and X-rays for patients. Some patients have even been waitlisted.
