Staffing shortages continue to burden dental profession

According to an article from Becker’s Dental + DSO Review, the dental profession continues to face a staffing shortage that will likely last several more years.

Experts cited in the report said the staff predominantly affected by these shortages are office managers and dental hygienists — likely as a result of competing salaries. A survey conducted in April found that dental assistants are also among the most difficult positions to recruit.

The experts recommended that dental practices consider improving workplace culture and offering benefits such as continuing education benefits to help retain staff if higher compensation isn’t an option. As many other medical specialties handle similar shortages, the experts indicated that these challenges may continue for several more years as dental practices determine the most effective solutions to recruit and retain staff.
