State college secures funding to address workforce shortage

Lyon College received $15 million to open the first dental school in Arkansas. The funding will support the development of the Lyon College School of Oral Health and Dental Medicine, which is slated to admit its first class of dental graduate students in fall 2025.

Lyon College aims to educate health care professionals from Arkansas and beyond, with a focus on strengthening dental health care access and improving the quality of life for Arkansans. The funding was part of a larger legislative package that includes investments in Arkansas’s health and education priorities.

“The appropriation supporting the creation of Arkansas’ first dental school is a game-changer for Lyon College and for the state,” said Melissa Taverner, Ph.D., Lyon College president. “As we continue to meet benchmarks in our accreditation process with the American Dental Association’s Commission on Dental Accreditation, we anticipate admitting our first class of dental graduate students in fall 2025, enabling us to educate health care professionals from Arkansas for Arkansas and beyond.”
