State could let towns remove fluoride from water

Some Kentucky legislators want to remove fluoride from the state's drinking water.

A bill was proposed earlier this month that would allow local municipalities and water districts to stop fluoridating their water if they choose. However, dental professionals said scientific evidence supports fluoridation as a health-promoting measure. 

"Let us not today be guilty of removing this oral health benefit from our arsenal — the one public health measure that has the ability to improve the lives of our fellow Kentuckians, perhaps even beyond our ability to measure," said Kentucky Dental Association President Stephen Robertson, D.M.D.

The House committee approved the bill on a 16-1 vote.
