State requires employers to provide paid medical leave during pregnancy
New York has become the first state to offer paid leave for prenatal care, providing pregnant workers with at least 20 hours of paid time off for medical appointments related to pregnancy. The new law, which took effect Jan. 1, allows workers to use this leave for various pregnancy-related care, such as physical exams, end-of-pregnancy care and fertility treatments. Gov. Kathy Hochul championed the measure to reduce maternal and infant mortality in the state. Employers cannot require medical information for leave requests, and the leave is distinct from any other paid sick leave. Spouses of pregnant women are not eligible for this leave.
