STI rates may be down

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that sexually transmitted infections could be slowing.

In a report, the CDC indicated that the rates of gonorrhea declined by 7% since 2022, primary and secondary syphilis declined by 10%, and newborn syphilis increased by just 3% compared with 30% prior to 2022.

However, American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino individuals as well as gay and bisexual men may experience disproportionate rates of STIs as a result of socioeconomic differences. For instance, poverty, lack of health insurance and stigma may contribute to poorer access to high-quality health services.

The CDC called for further community-level strategies and more accessible STI testing and treatment options to help prevent STIs in the United States.
