Spending more to save more — nicknamed “spaving” — is a common pitfall among Americans. “Limited-time” and “buy one, get one” deals are among those that encourage consumers to spend more to save more, as are discounts and free shipping that kick in for larger purchases.
Spending to save can lead to excessive buying habits and high-interest credit card debt, said Andrea Woroch, a consumer savings expert.
Tips for avoiding this type of spending include identifying and avoiding triggers that lead to impulse sale purchases, paying with cash, doing the math behind the deals to assess their real value, steering clear of stores that tempt you with sales, deleting stored payment details to make purchasing harder, and sleeping on a purchase before completing it.
