Streamlining research proposal review process with AI

Investigators have examined whether artificial intelligence platforms could help eliminate delays in the research proposal review process among institutional review boards.

In an observational study published in the Journal of Empirical Research on Human Research Ethics, the investigators analyzed the accuracy of three AI platforms against clinical practice guidelines in 10 case studies involving key institutional review board functions.

The investigators found that the AI platforms effectively identified good clinical practice guidelines, violations, conflicts of interest, vulnerable populations and gaps in standard operating procedures. Further, the AI tools provided guidance on expedited review criteria and developed standard operating procedures.

Although the findings indicated that AI platforms could minimize delays in the review process and improve institutional review board decision-making, the investigators emphasized the continued need for human oversight to validate the accuracy and appropriateness of the AI-generated output.
