Student loan borrowers can still access debt relief through several programs

Individuals with student debt may still be able to access student loan forgiveness programs.

Recent polls have suggested that student debt may contribute to delays in purchasing homes, getting married and starting families, according to a news report from Newsweek. As a result, many borrowers have turned to student debt forgiveness opportunities.

Although the waiver period for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program ended in 2022, eligible borrowers — including public servants in the federal government or nonprofit organizations — who submitted applications before the end date may be able to receive debt relief. The Teacher Loan Forgiveness program is available for those who have been employed as high-quality teachers for low-income students for at least five consecutive years. The Total and Permanent Disability Discharge is available for those with total and permanent disability, which excludes them from having to repay certain loans.

Despite these programs, there are often strict requirements for borrowers to qualify. Those who think they may be eligible are advised to contact their loan servicer to better understand their options.
