Student loan forgiveness opportunity ends soon
Many student loan borrowers have just over one month to act on an opportunity that would cancel their student loans, according to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an independent federal financial watchdog agency.
The U.S. Department of Education will conduct a one-time adjustment this summer for loans enrolled in the Income Driven Repayment program, but borrowers must take steps to qualify. The deadline to act is April 30.
To receive the most credit toward loan cancellation, the agency said, borrowers with certain types of federally managed loans must consolidate them. These include commercially held Federal Family Education Loans, Parent PLUS loans, Perkins loans and Health Education Assistance Loans.
