Sunscreen selection habits by US location
Investigators have analyzed trends in sunscreen preference on the basis of urban or rural location in the United States.
In a study, published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, the investigators asked 497 patients — 242 of whom resided in Manhattan, New York, and 255 of whom resided in Athens, Ohio — to complete a survey regarding the factors influencing their selection of sunscreen.
Although the SPF was found to be the most important characteristic for the participants in both urban and rural locations, those residing in Manhattan prioritized dermatologist recommendations, texture and ingredients, whereas those residing in Athens prioritized cost, broad-spectrum protection and brand.
The findings demonstrated a potential gap in sunscreen education.
