Syphilis cases on the rise

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported there were 207,255 cases of syphilis in 2022, which is the largest number since 1950 and an increase of 17.1% since 2021. This includes all stages and congenital syphilis.

According to the report, the national rate of primary and secondary syphilis among women increased by 19.2% from 2021 to 2022.

The increases among women align with the increases among heterosexual men, indicating an "expanding heterosexual syphilis epidemic in the United States."
