TB outbreak leads to public health emergency

City officials in Long Beach, California, declared a public health emergency after a tuberculosis outbreak resulting in one person dying and the hospitalization of nine others, stemming from a group of people who stayed at a Long Beach hotel room together.

As of April 29, 14 cases of tuberculosis were associated with the outbreak.

Officials said about 170 people could have been exposed.

Tuberculosis is a serious illness that affects the lungs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
