Texas resident tests positive for avian flu

A person who was exposed to dairy cattle in Texas has tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus, or H5N1 bird flu.

The patient reported eye redness as their only symptom and is recovering while being treated with an antiviral drug for flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention considers the health risk of the virus to the public to be low.

This is the second person to test positive for the virus in the U.S. A previous human case occurred in 2022 in Colorado.
