Tinnitus could be associated with postzoster neuralgia
Investigators may have uncovered an increased risk of tinnitus among individuals who have neuralgia following herpes zoster infections.
In a study published in Medicine, the investigators used data from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort to examine the relationship between postzoster neuralgia and tinnitus among nearly 7,000 participants with and without postzoster neuralgia.
The investigators found that the participants with postzoster neuralgia were more likely to experience tinnitus compared with controls. Certain patient groups had a higher risk of developing tinnitus — including those who identified as female; individuals aged 40 to 59 years and particularly those aged 60 years and older; and those with comorbidities such as hearing loss, sleep disorders and anxiety.
As a result of the findings, the investigators indicated the critical need for clinicians to employ comprehensive management strategies among patients with postzoster neuralgia exhibiting neuropathic pain and auditory symptoms. Further studies may help identify more effective targeted interventions in this patient population.
