Tonsil removal could be linked to stress-related issues
Having your tonsils or adenoids out may put you at a higher risk of developing a stress-related disorder.
In a study published in JAMA Network Open, investigators examined the outcomes of more than 1 million children and young adults who underwent a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy or neither of the procedures.
The investigators found that the patients who underwent the surgical procedures were more likely to develop stress-related disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder compared with those who didn’t undergo the procedures. Stress-related disorders were most prevalent among the patients aged 26 years or older and within 10 years postsurgery.
The findings highlighted the need to better understand the relationship between adenotonsillar disease and stress-related disorders.
