Type 2 diabetes risk post-COVID-19 infection in children

The risk of Type 2 diabetes may be increased among children who experienced COVID-19 infections.

In a study published in JAMA Network Open, investigators analyzed the electronic health records of more than 600,000 patients aged 10 to 19 years who experienced COVID-19 infections or other respiratory infections.

The investigators discovered that those who experienced COVID-19 infections had a greater likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes within six months of infection — particularly those who were overweight or obese and those who were hospitalized with COVID-19 infections.

The findings suggested the need for continued monitoring of diabetes outcomes post-COVID-19 infection in this patient population.
