Ultraprocessed foods may be linked to early mortality

Ultraprocessed foods and drinks may increase the risk of early mortality, according to an article published in CNN. Diets high in ultraprocessed products have previously been linked to obesity, cardiovascular disease, stroke, Type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, dementia and all-cause mortality.

The experts cited in the article noted that a study found that high consumption of ultraprocessed products may reduce the life span by over 10%. In the study, the participants with the highest risk of early mortality reported frequently consuming diet sodas, sugary sodas, refined grains like baked goods, processed meats like deli meat and sausages, and ingredients such as artificial sweeteners, added sugars, emulsifiers, artificial colorings and dyes, antifoaming agents, bulking agents, gelling agents and glazing agents.

However, weight was not always associated with the risk of mortality. The experts stressed that even the participants who had a normal weight and ate healthier were at risk of early mortality from ultraprocessed food consumption.

To reduce the risk of mortality, the experts recommended that Americans consume higher amounts of whole foods, such as fruits and vegetables.
