Ultrasonic vs. conventional denture cleaning interventions
Investigators have compared the efficacy of two denture cleaning techniques, according to a study published in the Journal of Dentistry.
The investigators conducted a three-month denture cleaning intervention involving 56 older patients whose extensive partial and complete acrylic dentures underwent an ultrasonic cleaner combined with immersion in a denture cleanser solution or immersion in the denture cleanser solution followed by conventional brushing. The study consisted of a two-week preintervention period, three-month first intervention period, two-week washout period and three-month second intervention period.
Although both the ultrasonic intervention and the conventional intervention improved plaque area coverage and denture stomatitis, the ultrasonic intervention was more effective at achieving denture cleanliness and patient satisfaction.
The investigators recommended use of the ultrasonic denture cleaning technique to maintain optimal denture hygiene and mitigate biofilm accumulation in older patients.
