Uncontrolled hypertension among US adults may be concerningly high
A large proportion of adults with hypertension may be unaware they have the condition.
In a study published in JAMA Network Open, investigators used January 2017 to March 2020 data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey to analyze the cascade in hypertension control among 3,129 U.S. patients aged 18 years or older with uncontrolled hypertension.
The prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension was found to be more than 80%, particularly among those aged 18 to 44 years. Further, among the study population, fewer than 60% of them were unaware of their condition despite nearly 70% of them visiting two or more health care providers within the past year.
The findings emphasized the need for improved hypertension awareness, treatment and control strategies to reduce the condition’s burden in the United States.
