Underrecognized stroke risk factor

Iron deficiency anemia could be a risk factor for ischemic stroke.
In a study published in eJHaem, investigators used a nationwide electronic health record database to examine the medical records of more than 21 million individuals.
The investigators found that those aged 15 to 49 years who experienced an ischemic stroke were more likely to have iron deficiency anemia compared with those who didn’t experience a stroke. Other stroke risk factors included hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes and smoking history.
The findings suggested that younger patients may have fewer visits to determine and manage their cardiovascular risk factors as well as limited access to nutritious foods. As a result of the underrecognized risk associated with iron deficiency anemia, screening for the condition should be better integrated into the care strategies of this patient population.
