Understanding complex periodontal concepts: ChatGPT vs dental students
Researchers have explored the ability of the large language model ChatGPT to handle periodontal surgery concepts.
In a study published in the European Journal of Dental Education, the researchers compared the knowledge and comprehension accuracy of ChatGPT-3.5 and -4 compared with 134 dental students when answering a questionnaire about periodontal surgery.
Although the dental students were found to have greater accuracy in answering the questions, followed by ChatGPT-4 and ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4’s accuracy on open-ended questions was comparable to that of the dental students.
The findings demonstrated that ChatGPT-4 was less reliable in understanding complex periodontal surgery–related concepts; however, the tool could potentially be used to aid with curriculum support and clinical documentation in educational settings.
