United States officially breaks with WHO
The United States has formally withdrawn from the World Health Organization.
Nearly every country is a member of WHO, which has a long list of responsibilities, including coordinating responses to outbreaks, providing assistance to lower-income countries, distributing supplies and treatments like vaccines and establishing guidelines for health conditions, according to a news article from The Associated Press. The United States’ departure from WHO comes one year after the Trump administration’s initial announcement of the withdrawal in January 2025.
In response to the withdrawal, WHO stated that the United States still owes the organization an outstanding financial obligation of about $280 million. The U.S. government is currently working with WHO to determine what final steps need to be completed to effectuate the exit.
