Update on Biden administration’s student debt relief plan

A judge has granted an injunction at the request of the Eastern District of Missouri to halt the Biden administration’s student debt relief plan, preventing the U.S. Department of Education from delivering debt forgiveness to more than 25 million American borrowers.

The move followed the expiration of a temporary restraining order filed by seven U.S. states in September, according to a news article published in The Washington Post. The legislators behind the injunction suggested that the student debt relief plan could burden state tax revenue and be detrimental to the earnings of state entities. For instance, they argued that a quasi-state agency servicing federal student loans and funding state scholarships could lose revenue if direct student loans are reduced or canceled.

The Education Department stated that the proposed plan is designed to provide partial or full debt relief to borrowers facing unaffordable debt. The final proposal is expected to be published in the fall if the plan isn’t overturned.

The American Dental Association continues to advocate for student debt relief, including legislation that would lower interest rates overall and pause the accrual of interest and payments on federal student loans for dental students in residency.
