Updated guidelines for managing psoriatic arthritis
The European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology’s updated recommendations on the management of psoriatic arthritis may provide a more comprehensive, personalized approach to treating the disease — while incorporating pharmacologic advances and tailoring treatment strategies based on patient needs and disease manifestations. The updated guidelines were published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
Through a review process, an international team of researchers developed evidence- and consensus-based methodologies to optimize treatment approaches. Among the key updates were seven overarching principles and 11 detailed recommendations covering individualized treatments; shared decision-making; comprehensive care addressing comorbidities; regular assessments using validated outcome measures; early interventions; the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, oral glucocorticoids and conventional synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs and tailoring treatment strategies on the basis of clinical manifestations and comorbidities.
The researchers hope the updated guidelines provide a framework for the personalized, evidence-based management of psoriatic arthritis.
