U.S. fertility rate dips to record low in 2023
The U.S. birth and general fertility rates are declining, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Based on CDC data, the fertility rate reached a record low in 2023. The number of births in the United States declined by 2% from 2022 to 2023, and the general fertility rate declined by 3% in 2023 to 54.5 births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 years. Among women aged 15 to 19 years, 15 to 17 years and 18 to 19 years, the birth dates declined by 4%, 2% and 5%, respectively, between 2022 and 2023.
Additionally, fewer mothers received prenatal care in their first trimester and more early-term births were recorded — increasing by 2% from 2022 to 2023.
