Use of AI models in dental radiology
Artificial intelligence models may benefit dental radiology, according to a study published in the International Dental Journal.
In the study, investigators conducted a systematic review of articles published on PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane, Web of Science, Google Scholar and the Saudi Digital Library between 2018 and 2023 and identified 16 studies that met the inclusion criteria. They used the diagnostic test accuracy criteria detailed in PRISMA-DTA to assess the effectiveness of AI models at tooth numbering and detection through dento-maxillofacial radiographic images.
The investigators determined that AI models were utilized for automated tooth numbering and detection, the detection of teeth in cone-beam computed tomography images and the identification of dental treatment strategies. The models exhibited a highest precision of 98% and 99.4% for tooth numbering and detection, respectively, thereby demonstrating the potential for AI models as a supplementary diagnostic tool in dental radiology.
