Use of resveratrol to prevent dental caries

Resveratrol may be effective at minimizing the risk of dental caries.

In a study published in the Journal of Dentistry, researchers treated 126 bovine enamel specimens with either 50, 100, 200 or 400 micrograms per milliliter of resveratrol; phosphate buffered saline; dimethyl sulfoxide and 0.12% chlorhexidine. They obtained biofilm from the saliva of 10 participants exposed to 0.2% sucrose for a period of five days. Further, the researchers assigned 12 participants to receive 100 milligrams per liter of resveratrol, 0.05% sodium fluoride at 226 milligrams per liter of fluorine, 100 milligrams per liter of resveratrol plus 0.05% sodium fluoride or deionized water.

The researchers found that 50 micrograms per milliliter of resveratrol reduced biofilm metabolic activity, 200 micrograms per milliliter decreased mutans streptococci, chlorhexidine protected against dental caries in vitro and resveratrol alone or in combination with sodium fluoride helped manage bacteria correlated with dental caries in vivo.

The findings highlighted the potential of resveratrol to prevent dental caries.
