Using AI to number teeth on periapical radiographs
Researchers examined whether an artificial intelligence model may be effective at identifying and numbering teeth on periapical radiographs.
In a study published in Clinical Oral Investigations, the researchers used 6,446 anonymized periapical radiographs with distinguishable tooth boundaries to train, validate and test the AI model.
The researchers found that on 644 periapical radiographs included in the test phase of the study, the true positive rate was 94.4% — demonstrating a high rate of accuracy in tooth numbering.
The findings indicated that the AI model may help dentists reduce the error rate when identifying and numbering teeth on periapical radiographs.
