Vegan diets may increase childbirth risks

Women who reported they adhered to vegan diets during pregnancy had offspring with lower mean birth weight compared with omnivorous mothers.

Further research is needed regarding possible causality between plant-based diets and pregnancy and birth outcomes to strengthen the basis for dietary recommendations, but low protein intake could be one explanation for the observed association with birth weight.

Women following plant-based diets also had a higher risk of preeclampsia, a potentially dangerous pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure.
