Virus from mosquitoes increases in Americas

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health alert in response to increased cases of Oropouche virus disease in the Americas.

The virus — transmitted through infected midges and mosquitoes — is characterized by symptoms such as headaches, fevers, myalgia and meningitis in severe cases. The CDC noted that Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, Cuba, the United States and Europe have all reported cases. Between Jan. 1 and Aug. 1, there have been more than 8,000 cases and two deaths from Oropouche virus disease.

Without the existence of a vaccine to protect against the disease, the CDC recommended testing travelers from high-risk regions and enhancing surveillance efforts across the Americas.
