Walking faster to improve heart health

...

A faster walking pace could help reduce the risk of cardiac arrhythmias.

In a study published in Heart, investigators examined the outcomes of more than 420,000 individuals who participated in the UK Biobank.

The investigators found that compared with those who self-reported a slower walking pace, the participants who self-reported a faster walking pace had a greater reduction in the incidence of all cardiac arrhythmias, atrial fibrillation, bradyarrhythmias and ventricular arrhythmias. Additionally, accelerometer data revealed that longer time spent walking at a faster pace helped decrease the risk.

The findings suggested that employing a faster walking pace could be a safe and effective strategy to minimize the risk of cardiac arrhythmias.
