What can cause sudden cardiac arrest?

Investigators may have uncovered modifiable risk factors associated with sudden cardiac arrest.
In a study published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology, the investigators used UK Biobank data to examine the outcomes of more than 500,000 individuals.
After a median follow-up of 13.8 years, the investigators identified more than 3,000 incident sudden cardiac arrests and assessed modifiable risk factors across six domains: Lifestyle, physical, psychosocial, socioeconomic, local environment and early-life exposure. Among the risk factors were higher body mass index, greater arm fat mass and percentage, elevated systolic blood pressure and lower education level.
The investigators hope their findings can lead to the development of interventions to target lifestyle, physical, psychosocial, socioeconomic and environmental factors contributing substantially to sudden cardiac arrest.
