What makes people participate in diabetes prevention programs?
Investigators may have uncovered the factors that inhibit or promote engagement in diabetes prevention programs among patients with prediabetes, according to a study published in Diabetic Medicine.
The investigators used Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, Cinahl, Web of Science, Scopus and Pre-Medline to identify 90 studies published between 2000 and 2023 that analyzed the barriers and enablers of participation in diabetes prevention programs.
Among seven influencing factors were: financial, environmental, personal, health care, social and cultural, demographic and program mechanisms. The investigators emphasized the significance of considering these factors when developing and implementing diabetes prevention programs. They also hypothesized that recognizing the factors may help guide decision-making for health care professionals and policymakers, in order to facilitate greater participation in the preventive programs and potentially reduce the prevalence of diabetes.
The investigators hope their findings provide insights into effective diabetes prevention strategies and lead to improvements in the design and delivery of future diabetes prevention programs.
