When to whiten teeth

...

Experts, including Matthew Messina, D.D.S., consumer spokesperson for the ADA, detailed how proper planning and timing could be important factors in achieving the best teeth-whitening outcomes, according to a news article from Today.

Dr. Messina suggested that undergoing a dental cleaning prior to teeth whitening could be more effective because dentists can remove plaque built up on the teeth and address any oral health issues that may be exacerbated by whitening products. He noted that patients whose teeth appear whiter following their dental visit may opt out of additional teeth whitening. Further, patients were advised to consult with their dentists to better understand whether teeth whitening might be right for them, receive optimal product recommendations and establish realistic expectations.

The experts noted that the most effective teeth-whitening products contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. The ADA Seal of Acceptance means the manufacturer has provided data to back up the product’s claims about whitening safety and effectiveness. While over-the-counter products can offer similar results as in-office procedures, it may take longer for patients to see whiter teeth. Those with preexisting tooth sensitivity should ask their dentists about the risks and benefits of teeth whitening prior to using the products.
