Which factors may affect response to biologic treatment in psoriasis?

Investigators have found that age, body mass index and smoking status may have an impact on biologic treatment efficacy in patients with psoriasis, according to a study published in JAMA Dermatology.

The investigators conducted a meta-analysis to assess the clinical characteristics associated with biologic treatment efficacy among 21,438 patients with psoriasis who participated in 40 studies.

After a period of six months, they found that older age, previous biologic exposure, higher body mass index, previous smoking status and current smoking status were negatively associated with achieving 90% reductions in the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index in the observational studies included in the analysis. However, in randomized clinical trials, only a body mass index of 30 or higher was negatively associated with this reduction in the psoriasis score.

Further studies may be needed to determine whether the factors identified in the analysis vary across biologic treatments in this patient population.
