WHO encourages production of mRNA vaccines for bird flu
The World Health Organization announced an initiative as part of its mRNA Technology Transfer Program to accelerate the development and accessibility of mRNA vaccines for H5N1 avian influenza or bird flu. The program was jointly established by the WHO and the Medicines Patent Pool mRNA Technology Transfer Program.
The WHO has identified bird flu as having the potential to cause a future pandemic, according to an article published in ABC News. The agency’s initiative will help identify vaccine candidates for manufacturers in low- and middle-income countries. Similar to COVID-19 vaccines, bird flu mRNA vaccines are designed to teach the body how to produce proteins that trigger an immune response and can be manufactured quicker than traditional vaccines.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has previously stated that the risk of bird flu to the U.S. general population is low and there have been no cases of humans transmitting the virus to other humans.
