WHO urges obesity be considered chronic disease
The World Health Organization has issued draft guidelines in support of the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists to manage adult patients with obesity.
The WHO’s expert committee concluded that the weight loss drugs in combination with behavioral and lifestyle modifications could be effective at treating obesity, according to a news report from Reuters. The organization’s expert committee characterized obesity as a progressive and relapsing disease that contributes to millions of deaths each year.
As a result, the WHO hopes its guidelines can develop a standard of care that reshapes the treatment landscape for obesity.
